Welcome to plotTree’s initial beta release! We’re launching with the core features that make structured story development actually work: framework-based planning, automatic state tracking, and AI-powered content generation. This is very much a beta—we’re building in public and shipping rapidly based on your feedback.

Story Development

Framework-Based Scene Planning - Apply established storytelling frameworks (Three-Act Structure, Hero’s Journey, Save the Cat, etc.) to your projects. Frameworks provide sections, milestones, and transitions that guide your narrative structure.
Timeline Interface - Visual representation of your story structure with precise placement using an integer-based timeline (0-1000 points). Drag and resize scenes, view framework structure, and navigate your narrative spatially.

Story Vault & State Tracking

Automatic Vault Object Detection - AI analyzes scene planning text to identify mentions of characters, locations, and items. Uses intelligent fuzzy matching to handle name variations and nicknames.
Dynamic State Evolution - Track how vault objects (characters, locations, items) change throughout your story with VaultObjectStates—snapshots at each scene boundary.
Vault Object Types - Support for Characters, Locations, Items, Magic Systems, and custom types with flexible field definitions.
Pending Vault Objects - Unmatched mentions are stored for manual review when auto-generation is disabled, giving you control over what gets tracked.

AI Features

Scene Content Generation - AI writes narrative prose based on your planning fields (purpose, conflict, resolution, summary) with full project context awareness.
Intelligent Scene Pacing - Rule-based word count calculation using genre baselines and multiplicative modifiers based on AI analysis of the scene.
AI-Generated Cover Art - Create project cover images with multiple style options.
AI-Generated Avatars - Generate character and location avatars with multiple styles.
Project AI Assistant - Conversational AI agent with full access to your project data for writing guidance, brainstorming, and creative support.
General AI Assistant - Cross-project writing assistant for general storytelling questions and guidance.

Bring Your Own Keys (BYOK) - Connect your OpenRouter API key for full billing control and pay providers directly at cost. No credit systems, no usage limits beyond your own API tier.
Expert-Curated AI Models - Pre-configured model selections optimized for specific tasks.
Secure API Key Storage - Encrypted API key storage with user-controlled management.
Subscription Management - Stripe integration for beta access with flexible pricing tiers.

User Experience

Project Management - Create, organize, and manage multiple story projects with status tracking and metadata.
Dashboard Interface - Central hub for accessing projects, configuring settings, and managing your workspace.
Authentication System - Secure user accounts with email/password authentication.
Dark Mode Support - Full dark/light theme support throughout the application.
Responsive Design - Mobile-friendly interface for most features (desktop recommended for timeline editing).

Known Limitations

Being honest: this is a beta. Here’s what’s not quite there yet:

Single Plotline Only - Multiple plotlines for subplots and character arcs are planned for future releases.
Limited Framework Customization - Custom framework creation is coming soon.
Mobile Timeline - Timeline editing works best on desktop; mobile view is optimized for reading, not editing.
Documentation In Progress - We’re actively writing docs as features stabilize.
